What a building it was.
Large retro-styled escalators led the way up the second floor, where hundreds of bodies were packed together, all enjoying their drinks.
A fountain sat between the escalators, its reflection glistening off the marble behind it. Large plants were situated throughout the lobby and second floor. They looked expensive.
Bea gasped and dragged Zeke over to the first one she saw, pointing up at the leaves as he nodded and smiled.
That left Cyrus, Eleanor and me.
Cyrus gazed around the room. âIâm gonna hunt down the bar.â
His long mane disappeared into the throng of bodies. Just Eleanor and I now.
âCare for a drink, Mâlady?â I asked her with an exaggerated bow as I plucked two flutes of champagne from a passing waiter.
She grinned, revealing that brilliant smile of hers. âWhy thank you, sir.â
We made our way through the crowd in search of any suspicious-looking persons. As far as I could tell, it was just a bunch of Phdâs gathered to get fucked up and ring in the New Year.
âAnyone put eyes on Dr. Wells yet?â Bea muttered into the earpiece.
âNegative, ghost rider,â I said back, obscuring my mouth with my glass of champagne.
âNo, butâwait a minute. Yeah, Iâve got her, second floor bar,â Cyrus whispered.
I tugged on Eleanorâs arm and pointed to the stairs. Nodding, she followed me as we made our way up. There was Dr. Wells, sitting with a handsome man in his late fifties who looked like old money.
His hairline was still nearly perfect, and his skin was tanned to perfection. The eloquence with which he held himself made me sort of feel like a homeless man whoâd stolen a tux and slipped in through the back.
Dr. Wells nodded and laughed, tilting her head slightly and spotting us. She waved us over.
Eleanor approached the two of them.
âMr. Rogers, Ms. Cromwell, this is Roger Scalzi, one of my clinic's biggest benefactors,â Dr. Wells explained.
I knew it. Mr. Scalzi extended his hand to me. I shook it.
âPleased to meet you,â he said. âAre you friends of Dr. Wells?â
Eleanor cleared her throat. âYes, we are. New friends, but friends all the same. Eleanor,â she said as she took his hand.
âEnchanted,â was his response with a deep look into her eyes.
Oh, brother.
âUh-oh, look what the cat dragged inâ¦â my earpiece said into my ear.
I spun around toward the doors down below. Devin was easy to spot in the crowd. He wore a tux like the rest of us, but it looked grungier, more worn in. His bowtie was tilted, but in a way that actually looked kinda cool.
âDo we give him an earpiece? We could always use more bodies on guard duty,â Bea suggested.
Eleanor leaned away from Roger for a second to respond. âIâve got an extra. Somebody make contact with him and tell him Iâm up here.â
âWell, it was great to meet both of you,â Mr. Scalzi said in a tone that meant scram.
He turned back toward Dr. Wells and began conversing with her in a low enough voice that we couldnât possibly hear, and therefore were unable to contribute to the conversation.
